THE INFLUX OF FRENCH CONVICTS.

The Governments of the various Australian colonies will shortly take joint legislative action to prevent the inllux of French and other convicts. The matter was referred to in -the Assembly by Mr Woods, who asked the Premier to communicate with the other colonies with that object. Mr Gillies explained that the maocer had been under practical consideration for some time here and in the other colonies. A bill dealing with the question on liberal lines had been drawn by the Queensland Government, and a second measure had since been framed by the Attorney-General of New South Wales ; but no definite result had yet been obtained. The Victorian delegates to the Imperial Conference had been specially instructed to ascertain the lines upon which the bill could be drawn so as to meet the approval of other delegates to the Imperial Conference. X was not possible to .say what progress had been made, but as soon as the delegates returned to the colonies united action would be taken to deal practically with the question.
