Gigantic Embezzlement.

At Extcr Assizes, lately, Joseph Edward Curteis, solicitor, of Plymouth, and formerly clerk to the East Stonehouse Local Board, pleaded guilty to various charges of forgery and embezzlement. Tho prisoner absconded, and aftor some months was arrested in Calcutta, whence he was brought home. The total amount of prisoner's defalcations was between £12,000 and £13,000. When asked if he had anything to say, the prisoner replied that he regretted sincerely the injury he had done to po many. There would be £4,000 due to him after the payment of his debts, and he desired to made restitution to this extent. Somo years ago he became responsible for a friend, and to this he traced his ruin. Curteis was subsequently brought up, and sentenced to five years' penal servitude.
