BE SPECIAL SETTLEMENTS.
(to thk kijitou.) . Sin,— Tn your last issue appeared a letter signed James Munroe. ,A f f the cn<l of rather an irate effusiou/lic asks me not to pass judgem-e-lit on special settlements, I hajMT^noHher condemned or judged £j«*m in any way. There are a number of special settlements of various deseiiptions. 1 am a special settler myself of a certain kind, and I shonld be very sorry to say or think that many of them are not useful, and will I hope be a success : but I think it a matter of question, if it is a prudent thing at present to spend a very large sum of money in taking people to out of the way places, feeding' them, paj ing them for clearing, etc. etc., and then leave them to their fate ; for if settlers have not a little capital they would want help of some kind foKatime. The tone ami exposition of Mr Munros answer will satisfy every intelligent person. — I am, etc. Enw. F. Roche. Ohineroa, July Gth, 1887.
