VICE-REGAL ECONOMY.

Sir Wm. Robi:nson, the Governor of South Australia, is, according to the rules laid down by all political economists, an invaluable member of society. It is by what a man saves, nob by what he spends that ho benefits tho community, John S. Mill teaches us ; and Governor Robinson is a saving man. He is of Scotch extraction and fiom the noAh of Ireland, which perhaps has something to do with his praiseworthy economy. The other day, according to a story that is going the rounds in Adelaide, his aide-da-camp was intercepted by a South Australian Customs official just as he was leaving the Northterrace railway station with a neat little brown paper parcel under his arm. Governor Robinson is not so popular in South Australia as he ought to be, so the official stopped the aide, and desired to see the* contents of tho parcel. " Ifc is for Government House," said .his Excellency's messenger, pushing past. " Must see ■ what's in it," said the jealous douanier. " Well, look here," said the aide-de-camp, brought to bay, and-drop-ping his voice confidentially, "it's only a BuitTof clothoa !" '* ' Well, then , there's duty to be paid.' 1 "No, but you don't under stand," said the youthful aide, in a voice that shook with suppressed emotion. "It s only an old dress suit that his Excellency has had dyed in Melbourne. " The Customhouse official staggered back against the I wall, and that parcel went through.
