AMERICAN NEWS. San Francisco, June 3.
Hailstones, larger than hen's eggs, fell at Mississippi on May 31st, and nearly destroyed three or four towns, besides all crops. New York Chamber of Commerce propose to buy the gunboats to defend that port. The " Bulletin-Chronicle " libel suit, for §5,000, was decided in San Francisco, May 20, by a verdict for the former of $1.00. American admirers have sent Mr W. E. Gladstone a testimonial valued at over $5,000. Madame Janauschek, tragedienne^ had a severe fall at Rhode Island on May 18 and will probably be disabled for life. Efforts are being made to concentrate the transit of Australian mails across the continent, and thereby obviate delay in sailing of monthly steamer. The White Star Line steamers Celtic and Britannia came in collision in a fog on May 19th. They were much damaged, but managed to return to New York. No lives were lost. The Anglo-Haytien question is settled by the payment to the British Commissioner of 250,000 dollars.
