Jewish Nobility in England.
Alexander Weill, in the " Figaro" of $*ebruary 28th, celebrates his race by citing numerous cases of the infiltration of Jewish blood into the most aristocratic veins of England. The tendency to cross- the Semitic and British races, indeed he declares, to bo on tho increase. Beside Jews raised to high dignity by the Queen -.such as the Rothschilds, Disraelis, Montefiores, etc., Weill quotes many Jewish baronets and. knights bearing such names as Goldsmid, Solomon, Philiios, Samuel, Simon, Vogel and Magnu3. Tho Herschell peerage ; the baronetcies of Samuelson and Lopes ; and the titles of knighthood borne by the Behrens, the d'Aguilars, Wolfs and others, are more or less Jewish dignities. Among noble families mixed with the Jewish blood is given that of Sir Francis Head, the descendant of a Moses Monies, who had espoused the daughter and heiress of a former Sir Francis Head, and whoss sons resumed the maternal name. A grandg daughter of the same Moses Mendes became the wife of Rev. George Herbert, brother to the second Earl of Carnarvon. Another branch of the Mendes stock is traced into the Tweeddale family — through the marriage of a daughter of the Baron d' Aguilar ; and another daughter of Mendes married the second Viscount of Galway. The late Lord Houghfcon was a direct de, scendant. The blood of Moses Mendea spread much further than even Jthis ; but it wouldjprobably tire our readers to follow out all its ramifications. Suffice to say that it got into the veins of the Ricardos, and thonco into the neighbourhood of ducal coronets. The wife of tho present heir of Richmond and Gordon is a daughter of Percy Ricardo. The family of Abudiente, or Gideon, is another Jewish family with high aristocratic connections — includsng Viscounts, barons and even the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Childers, "a decendant of that same Sampson Gideon, who, after having formally renounced the synagogue, left a will in which he expressed the desire to be laid away with his fathers, in the JeAvish Cemetery.
The Walpole and Lisburne families have Jewish blood in their veins. Then the Countess Desart is the daughter of H. L. Bischofsheira, who was a Jew ; the Countess of Orkney is the widow of Baron. Samuel ; the Duchess of Saint Albans, the Countess of Roseberry, Lady Coutts-Lind-say and several other ladies of title are more ox' less of Jewish origin. There are two instances of a mixture of Jewish with royal blood— through alliances made by members of the housees of Richmond and Gage (of Plantagent doscent), and by members of the houses of Saint- Albans and Southampton. Weill bases most of his statements on Burkes " Peerage" and upon notes drawn from the " Jewish World," of London. Hi 3 spelling of names makes some of his quotations difficult to understand ; but the general result, if at all trustworthy, is worth studying. It appears that the editors of the " Peerage" took especial pains to elucidate the extent affiliation by marriage between Jews and titled Gentiles, for the benefit) of those interested in the Semitic question 5 and the Jewish papers have aided and confirmed the research. To what an extent the English press is controlled by Jews, would be an interesting subject for similar Weill's researches. Jews have been notably successful as newspaper < men ; and Joseph Levy proprietor of the London "Daily Telegram," the most successful English paper in the world, is an example. Facts like these from the most) > dignified and telling answer in the Stceckera > and other anti-Semitic preachers and pamphleteers.— N. 0. "Time-Democrat.
