SEVERE EARTHQUAKES IN ARIZONA.
An earthquake visited Arizona at 2.55 o'clock on May 8, lasting full one minute. Tlibio wib no jar, nor was it preceded by any noi-u, but was simply a gentle wave- like motio.i. A large majority of the population 1 iihhccl into the streets very much highlcned at the strange phenomenon, which ha ? never before visited this section, Short,]} after the earthquake a volcano broke out twenty-two miles south of Tucson in the Total Wreck mountains. The sky was b) illiancly illuminated. When the shock struck the Santa Catalina mountain great slices of the mountain were tom trom its bide and thrown to its base. Vast clouds of dust rose above its crest, 7,000 feet above the sea level, at thice cliilerent points from three to four miles apart. It was believed for some time that a Volcano had burst out of the crest of the mountain. At bhe time of i,he shock the wind was blowing from the west, and the temperature was 84. The movement of the tremor was north-west. Ev( ly building at Fort Huachuca is damaged. The new hospital has great ci'acks in ito walls. From all districts south and east of here reports of destruction to houses are received. , The cattle on the San Rafael ranches frantic and dashed around as if mad. A despatch of May sth discredits the statement that the earthquake was accompanied by a volcanic outburst :— " Continued shocks of earthquake and low rumbling noises are still distinctly heard. Alleged volcanoes on the Ban Jose mountains and one on the Whetstone mountains
can be seen from here. The party of oflicen's which left here yesterday to investigate the volcanoes have just returned from investigating the supposed volcano. They reporc that they found the timber and grass on fire on the summit of the Whetstones. Their opinion is that the flint rocks displaced by the earthquake caused the fire. "
