Loss of a Pocket Book Containing £1,000

The "Melbourne Argus " reports that on Saturday week Mr W. Sykes, a farmer residing at Dandenong, received' fcwo cheques from Messrs Campbell, Pratt, and Co., cattle salesmen, for £990 and, £lo respectively. He cashed, the larger one at the Colonial Bank at the corner of Elizabeth and Little Collins-streets, receiving nine £100 notes, three LlO notes, and the remainder in smaller notes. He sat down at pne of the tables in the banking-room tq count the money, and afterwards placed "both the j money and the cheque in a pocket-book. He then, to the best of his recollection, as he states,, put the pocket-book into the breast pockqt of his coat* .He left the bank and had reached the General Post Office, when he found that, the- pocket-book was not in his possession. He immediately returned to the bank, but nothing had been seen pf the book there, and it was not on the table where he had counted his money. He has come to th,e conclusion that the book was stolen from .his pockec, and has given information to the detective police. He states that he noticed a man with a note in his hand standing near him, and a little apart from the other customers in the bank, whilst he was counting his, money, but has no other reason to connect the man with the disappearance of the pocket-book. Besides the money, the pocket-book contained a passage ticket from Melbourne to London by the Sorata, and some letters and papers. , ,
