The following inward correspondence \va3 read : — Letter from Mr Coney, chief postmasLer, Thames, replying to a communication from the Board relative to the placing o( a lamp at the post office, and asking for further information. Letter fioin the Chairman of the Tau- ! ranga County Council directing' the attention of the Board to the advisability of making a joint effort to get a coach | road constructed by way of Thompson's track, and requesting the co-operation of the Board in procuring £7000 from ! Government to carry out the work. | After some discussion as to the necesI sity of securing for Te Aroha a fair | share of the benefits that would accrue from the expenditure of the money, it | was resolved, on the motion of Mr J. Comes, seconded by the Chairman, that the letter be acknowledged, with the inf jrmation that the proposal of the Tauranga County Council will have the hearty support of the Board ; and that the member for this district be requested to aid in obtaining the required grants. A letter from the Chairman of tho Ohinemuri County Council was received with a copy of the petition sent by that body to the House of Representatives praying that the control of the rivers within their district might not be granted to the Thames Harbour Board. Letter read from Mr L. A. Durrieu, Government Auditor, relative to the accounts of the Board. The Secretary intimated that he had •replied, stating that at the usual date of audit nj money had been received or expended. Mr J. W. lv Guilding wrote referring to his appointment as poundkeeper, and offering 2£ per cent of the gross proceeds to the Board if allowed to carry on tho pound as heretofore. The following resolution was proposed by the Chairman, secouded by Mr Dobson, and carried, that the offer of Mr Guilding be accepted, subject to his finding two sureties of £25 each, to bo approved of by the Board. A petition was leceived from a number of householders, requesting that a footpath be formed between the Bank of New Zcal.mJ corner at Rolleslon street itnd the lesidcnce of Mr Jas. Stanley. It was proposed by Mr Dobson, and secimied by Mr Ilotehin, that the Engineer be requested U) lvport as to tlu piobable co-t of the work. Carried. A petition was also received from rooidonts between the Wesloyan Chapel and the biuk-y.mU, asking f>r certain htivct- lmpruveinc/its in that direction. It was decided to l<\ive the matter in the hands of the Works ConuiiLiee with pouTi* to act., For the forming of the ro.i 1 and footpath in Boundaiy street from the bridge to the post-dfice, the Chairman stated th.it lie had received three tenders : A. Wallace, £19 10*: ; Mercer and Kerr, £19 9s; 11. Hyde, £U. The lastnamed being tho lowest had been accepted. Uxgixeeu's Repout. — To the Chairman Te Aroha Town Board. — Sir, — I have the honour in accordance with your instructions, to icporb on the probable oust of a parti il water supply for the town for lire prevention purposes, I assume the supply would be taken from the creek running through the town, at a point near the public pound, and brought from there in 9in pipes to a low level, say the Bank of New Zealand, Rolloston street, the difference of level being2oofeet. This would give a neverfailing supply, ami a pressure thatjwould throw tho water over any of the houses. Without knowing exactly in what portion of the town the Board would determine on laying pipes, I cannot give the cost ; but suppose you would 'bring the pipes from a dam near the pound down cither Biidge on Kenrick streets to Whi taker street to near the Bank, tho distance would be say 50 chains having fire pings at say every three chains. The cost would be as follows : Concrete dam near the pound, £155 ; 63£ tons 9in pipes, Jin thick, at £8, £503 ; lead for joints, £82 7s ; fire plugs, etc., £50 ; laying 50 chains, £100. Total, £895 7s. Tenders will be before the Board for making and metalling part of Boundary and Rewi streets near the post-office. The cost of making footpaths on both sides up Kenrick street from Whitaker street to Church street will be £5 ; this will include forming and metalling. I would recommend that a water-table be cut on the lower side of Church street from Bridge street to the creek at the back of Mr Robson's. If this were done it would stop a great deal of tho water from running through the blocks between Church and Whitaker streets. The length is 14 chains. It would be necessary to put a set of pipes across Kenrick street. The whole cost would be £8 2s. I would a'so suggest that a water-table be cut along Rewi street from Konrick street to Boundary street on the upper side. The cost would bo £1. If a temporary footpath is made up Wilson street from Whitaker street to the Catholic Church, I would advise it be made by the side of the Domain fence. If it were made Gft wide and gravelled, the cost would be about £10. — I have the honour, &c, F. Pavitt, Town Engineer. Of the works referred to in the report the Board decided to proceed only with tho footpaths in Kenrick street, at pro- ' sont, and a resolution was proposed by Mr Corncs, seconded by tho Chairman,

and carried, that the work be carried out at once, and the path extended as far as the gate at the entrance to the school grounds. The other works were allowed to stand over for further consideration. The Secretary was instructed to request the Engineer to prepare a plan of the town for the use of the Buatd. On the motion of the Chairman, seconded by Mr llotchin, it was rcsolvod that a special meeting of the Board be held on Saturday, June 11th, to discuss the advisability of striking a rate, and to frame bye-laws. , Accounts were passed for payment as j follows : C. Batcke, £8 3s ; G. Devey, £4 Is ; J. S. Bond, £4 4s ; Secretary (salary;, £6 Cs ; do. for office requisites, 16s lOd ; J. Heathcote, 11s.
