KARANGAHAKE.
When the County Chairman recently waited upon the directors of the Karangahake Quartz Redaction Company, in Auckland, for the purpose of arranging* with them aboufc tho tariff of charges for ore reduction, ho left under the impression that they had consented to adopt the scale adopted at the meeting of mine owners held here to consider the matter, and the chairman at the last meeting of the council, stated the directors had so agreed, verbally. At the suggestion of one of the councillors it was decided that the legal manager be wri'.ten to asKing that the adoption of the new scale of charges be given in wri ting. An answer to this letter has been sent to the County authorities stating the determination of the company to adhere to tha old scale of charges. Upon receipt of this communication the Council instructed the engineer not to proceed any further with the construction of the tramway and this means that but little quartz can be treated at Railey's mill during the coming winter* In view of that misfortune arrangements are in progress for transporting quartz to the Thames, and the first parcel is in course of transit from the Adeline mine. The manager of this company informs me that the amount realisable on the sale of the tailings alone will more than recoup the outlay on carting and shipping as well as that for treatment at the Moanataiari battery. That being so, other mines will follow suit, and if the roads will only admit of dr.iy traffic, the district will survive the efforts that are being made to snuff it out by those
who, in a great measure, have control of its progress. Hciteman and party tributers in the Woodstock mine have at last succeeded in striking- a good " Shool," of the precious metal which made its wppearancc in the. face of Hie level on Monday lost, and now there is eveiy prospect of this party being v*ll rewarded for their faith and perseverance. A fifty ton paicel of quartz is being run through UaileVs mill for the owners of the Monastery mine, and the stuff 13 said to t»e shaping I'jr a payable return. Two parties of tvibnters aro at work in the Ivanhoe mine, and several oftVi* have been made to lease that company's battery for quarlz ciuslnng purposes, so that there is every piohabiiity that the whole concern will again be in full operation veiy shortly. The iribulers in the Kenihvorth mine are about sending a ten ton paicel away for treatment at, Uniley's Mill, and a, fair percentage of the whole will be forwarded to the Thames, where it is to be dealt with by the chlorine piocess.
