Messrs Herbert end Fitzgerald's Great London Circus, which had aminged to exhibit at Paeroa on Wednesday next, and Te Aroha the day following, have, owing to the severity of the weather, postponed their visit. Owing to the exceptional seventy of j the weather on Tuesday last, tho Tea Meeting and Musical Entertainment which was to have been held on that da} f in aid of the Wealeyan church puisonage fund, had to be postponed and will now be held on May 24th. A ppeeial meeting of Te Aroha Town Board was held <mi last Saturday evening, to open tenders for the position of Engineer to the Board. Two tenders were received, viz., from Messrs H. Crump at ten per cent on work done, and F. Pavitt at five per cent. This per centage is to include cost of plans and specifications, and supervision ot work carried out. In the case of special work, such as taking street levels, etc , remuneration to be by special agreement. Resolved that Mr Pavitt's tender be accepted. Messrs Frazer, Hotchin and the Chairman were appointed a Board of Works. At the close of the meeting the members of tho Board discussed the matter of providing a water supply for the township, the importance of which was generally admitted. It was resolved that the Engineer be requested to furnish the Bouid with some general particulars and estimate of probable outlay mcessary to provide a water supply from the creek which runs through tho township./ Messrs Larkins and OBrien have finished their contract for the construction of the Thamcß Valley Railway to Hikutaia. The ordinary annual meeting of the New Find Gold Mining Company .vill be held in Auckland on Monday next, lu'th inst., at half-past two, The usual monthly meeting in connection with the Morrinsville branch of the Blue Ribbon Auny was held in the schoolroom on S.itmd.ty, Apiil 30th. There was a veiy good attendance ; Mr Green oc cnpied the chaii. After the nsiul programme of songs, recitations, etc., hid been gone through, an amusing Niggrr 6ketch " How we showed him up," was performed by Messrs Nelson, Noble, Marshall, and E. R. Horrell, causing the greatest amusement and keeping the room in roars of laughter. The Auckland Star's Parliamentary correspondent states that u the Minister for Mines feels very strongly on the necessity for reducing the House, and says that though the reduction of members would mean wiping out his own district, he would like to see the committees decision of Wednesday night adhered to. He holds that every member costs the country £500 per annum, considering the amount of correspondence and printing, dealing with parochial wants in a great rneasuie, that takes place. His experience as a minister has led him to that conclusion." The attempt on the part of the Thames County Council to pay their chairman a salary for services to be rendered during 1887, by voting him a year's salary in advance in November last (thus setting the new Counties Act which came into force on Jan. Ist at defiance, as therein it is distinctly Btated county chairmen shall not be paid salary), does not appear to have succeeded after all. From the balance- shepjtjpjibli&hc'd in the Thames Advertiser, ,we extract the following from the report of the auditor, Mr L. A. Durrieu :—- " Voucher 309.—£150 for chairman's salary. This sum (see minutes), is voted for a year's services from 24th Nov., 1886, and is paid in advance. In consideration of the sum paid, service is to bo rendered until November 24th, 1887, that is for one month, and eleven months. The sum £14 8s 6d for five weeks up to the 31st December, 1886, is legal. By the form of the transaction the council admit that a salary during the year 1887 is not legal, and must therefore agree with me in disallowing the balance of £135 lls 6d. Thia bulauce I diaullow."
