Some Valuable Fleeces.

A perusal of the awards for sheep at the Narandera (N,S.W.)P. and A. Association's Show of 1886 affords food for contemplation whether show-ring awards are to be taken as final in the case of sheep, or whether, as in the case of fat stock, a more practical test is not desirable. In these inattor-of fact times breeders do not aim so much at gratifying a fancy as at producing a class of stock that will pay them best. With this object in view the Bociety

•ittstftutaii a grand challenge prize for the ♦most valuablo fleece of wool, for which six 'tarns' fleeces were entered for competition. Q?be weigh ts are remarkable, and we give -the awards in the order of merit : —

The weights of the Boonoke fleeces - Mr Falkiner'e are the more remarkable from the fact that the sheep from which the fleeces wore shorn were purely grass-fed, whereas the whole of the others were artificially fed. Moreover, Mr M'Caughey's , sheep - third prize— had taken the Grand Champion prize at Deniliquin in 1886 and Grand Champion prize at Narandera in 1885. The fleece that took similar prise at Doniliquin, belonging to Mr F. L. Parker, of Quiamong, gave lb'lb J)oz in grease, 91b 4oz scoured ; value per lb, 16,|d ; total value, lls 10d ; whilst a Wanganella Ikeee came second with a value of lls 4;| d ;po that the Boouoke sheep stand in tlie proud position of being best as regards greasy weight, second weights, and value of fleeoo. We commend this mode of testing the value of stud sheep to the serious consideration of the council of the National A-feociation. — Queen Jcuuhv. '
