AT OWHAROA AND WAHII.
The Hon. Mr Larnach accompanied by War lon Stratford, Mess is Gordon, (Inspecting Engineer,) McLaren, (Miifint? Inspector, Thames), Mitchell, (Private Secretary,)Pn)fessor Brown, G. Fraser, and others left Thames on Sunday morning in t lie s.s. Despatch, and arrived at Faeroa abonfc 10.00. (where they were met by (ho County Chairman, Ors Moore, Walsh, Humplueys, Mr J. W. Walker, <.tc.,) from whence a start was at once made for Waihi,tho Minister, Warden, and one or two more proceeding in a four bourse trap, supplied by Messrs Bradley and Ferguson, the others on horseback. Owharoa Low Level Tunnel. — -At Owharoa Messrs Me Conochie, Keed, Greenville, and others as a deputation waited upon the Minister, being introduced by Cr J. 11. Moore, and asked that further assistance bo given for continuing tho tunnel. The disputed question respecting the amount of subsidy to be given I'y Government for the work recently done in connection with this tunnel was discussed, as> the county council understood the subsidy promised by Government for the tunnel was on the £2 to £1 principle, whereas on application being made for the money only L for L was forthcoming, and the reply from Wellington was to the effect that the subsidy promised was distinctly stated to be on the L for L principle. After some conversation the matter was satisfactoraly settled by tho Minister promising, in consideration of the amount of work done, (from tho L2OO still unexpended, and which had been temporarily diverted for Tui track, To
Aroha, out of the original subsidy of L4OO promised towarJg putting in this low level tun.iel) to increase the subsidy on work done to L2to Ll,the balance of L2OO ' io be ava Lible as ft subsidy on the L for L principle to Greenville and parly, who undertook to continue the tunnel ; the Minister however stating very clearly that the Government subsidy would not be paid for any work done, apart from the continuation ot the tunnel. Waihi was reached about 2 p.m., and the party at once proceeded to inspect the Union mine (under the guidance of the manager Mr J. W. Walker) close on 18 toi s ofoie from which was recently sold in London for over L-13 per ton. Some v<,ry rich stotiu was .shown at the mine, and .1 number of specimens given away. Mr J. 11. Mooro bliowod the Minister some very excellent stono fiom the Silverton mine. After pai taking o l ' luncheon, at the hotel, provided by MrJ II Moore, a start was made for Karatujahake, which wns reached about hall past six, the Minister and his party putting up at Shepherds Hotel.
