WATORONGOMAI. 1 Ture short supply of water for battery ! purposes still greatly retards mining operat'ons. The hoppers are all full at | the battery, and as a consequence the 1 tramway has had to suspend operations so far as the conveyance of quartz is concerned, and the hands are now engaged in repairing the line. The number of stampers ar work during the week has not exceeded ten. Work is progressing by contract in the various mines, the quartz being stacked for future removal. f Tenders. — -For the Battery Company's , contract, extension of water- race a distance of about 60 chains, let in two contracts : Twelve tenders were received for the earth work ranging from Is B^d per yard down to 9d, the last mentioned, that of B. Montague, being accepted.' For the timber work (labour only), 'the tenders ranged from £11 per choia
down to £5 12s, the latter, being the tender of G. Beeson, was accepted. Success. — Eighty truck loads from this mine wero despatched by steamer Batik i to Thames this morning, con-! signed to Pitkethley's battery for treatment. This course had to be adopted in consequence of the scarcity of water at tfirlh and Clarkes Battery.
WAITOA. There is nothing now of importance lo chronicle regarding the find of auriferous deposit on Mr J. B. Smith's property. An assay made some days ago by Mr H. H. Adams, yielded at the rate of £9 13s per ton, whilst some other tests gave returns varying from 15s to £2 10s. Mr Smith is about to have the deposit tested in a systematic manner, and has for some days past had a number of men employed in trenching and sinking, in order to ascertain the area over which the deposit exists and to what depth, etc. The results so far go to provo that tho deposit is very extensive. The Minister of Mines has promised to personally inspect the deposit during his visit to Te Arolia. The find has caused those residing on adjacent properties to go out "prospecting" on a small scale.
