THE MINES.
There* is nothing newto report with respect to the principal mines, where work is being carried on by contract. Success. — Owinj to the scarcity of water for crushing at the battery, the hands working in this mine have discontinue'} breaking out crushing dirt for a time, and are pushing ahead the low level, which i^ mw in about 150 ft leaving about another 00ft to drive before the reef will be intersecte 1, the country being of a givy sandstone character. It is expected that another reef will be met w.th before the one being driven for has been reached. Extension of Water-uacis. — The Battery- Company have called for tenders (which close at Waiorongomai to-daj at noon) for an extension of the water-race. The work now about to be undertaken will be let in two contract", one for earth work and the other for the timber work; for extending the rnce about threequarters of a mile towards Wairakau, so as to obtain the water from the first creek. When this work is completed it should give about five extra sluice heads of wafer. The w »rk will be pushed on with all possible despatch.
