A coreespondent writes :— " For- the pur- ' po3Q of soliciting the aid of your valuable 1 paper in giving publicity to an enterprise which at the present time may be of vital import to the public, 1 acldreps you, and have the honour to request that ( you will publish the following : — Some two months aince a small party of prospectors discovered a large reef of quartz, about 12 feet thick, in a deep gorge, upon land belonging to the ( Crown, situate in the Paremoremo Diptricfc. Application for a prospector's license has been made through +he Crown Lan&s Board, Good indications and small prospects of gold wero washed out of the bJue cement in bed of ravine. The prospectors secured the services of Mr Tom Barron, an old West Coast and Thame? miner, who has been for 3onie time prospecting the district arouDd Whau Creek, Uobaonvil'e, and Hellyers Creek, aud who wae convinced 'hat the matrix of the gold obtained by him iv those places would be found located In a line bearing north or northerly from his former working?, viz.. either in, the Paremoremo or Ararimu, He has made a thorough investigation of the reef, and under his direction several tons of stone have been broken out. He tested a email quantity, and gold could be seen in the atone, and is now making a more exhaustive test of a larger quantity which has been sent down. The result will be made known to you. "Acting upon his opinion, the prospectors are sinking a shaft some few feet from the reef, foe the purpose of cutting it on a lev© of about 40 feet below the cap of reef. After getting through the surface strata at about 12 feet they came upon a lode of bitumenoue shale, about 8 feet thick, in the hardest portion of which is a large quantity of metal resembling silver Through the lode there is a vein about 10 inches thick o* coarse, dork, bluish-green cement and quartz, and following that, about 18 inches thick of very hard blue sandstone, and a vein of chocolate coloured shale. Below the S-foot aeam, they are cutting through another load of blue cement mixed with quartz Below that again, there is hard blue sandstone Several old miners whoare now at Karangahake, who have seen the stone, affirm that it is identical with the- ' gold bearing reefa of that district". "I he prospector intend to forward a fewtons of stone from the low level to the Thames for reduction, and they request me to invite inspection of the reef .by any peraon3 who may be interested. The nearest; route from town is via JUverhead* by steamer ; a walk of 3& miles from, that" place will reach the claim, situate in what is known as the old 'Horseshoe bush.' "
