RESULT OF THE POLL.
The poll opened in the Te Aroha Public Hall at 9 a.m. on Thursday, Mr Hy. Crump acting as Returning Officer. Messrs Randolph, Cocks, and Whiteliouse acted as semtineers, and Mr J. Farrell as Poll Clerk. Much interest was taken in the election, and during the day a number of persons were busily employed in looking up voters and trying to influence them in favour of their several favourite candidates. The poll closed at G o'clock, and the result was anxiously avaited by a large crowd assembled outside the Hall. A fewminutes before 8 o'clock the Returning Officer read out the result from one of the windows of the Hall as follows :— Fiazer, D J 151 Qiiinn, E 138 Comes, J HO Dobson, J A 102 Hotchin, M 99 Lipcey, Gr ... ... ••< 97 Dillon, P 97 Downey A 91 Wood, T 75 Informal 9 The result was received with great cheers by those assembled. An attempt by the candidates to retu'-n thanks, in which Mr Frazer took the lead, was cut shoitby some of his friends taking hold of him, and carrying him off shoulder high through the towhbhip. Later on the Te Aroha Brass Band mustered together, and marching to the Domain played a seleotion of ail's in celebration of the occasion.
According to a Melbourne physician, Dr J. Singleton, the high death rate from typhoid fever has been due to the use of alcohol. In the HomcepatMc Hospital the drink of the patients was milk. &c, and the mortality was only one in thirty cases.
