OHINEMURI COUNTY COUNCIL.
The usual monthly meeting of the above Council was held in the County Chambers, Paeroa, on Saturday last. Present: Messrs Cock, (chairman), Corbett, Moore, Nicholls, Strange, Butler, Walsh, and Humphreys. Minutes ot the previous monthly meet ing were read and confirmed. The report of the Finance Committee recommending that accounts amounting to £34 Gs 4d, be passed for payment was adopted. Correspondence : Outward. — - To Chairman of the Thames County Council accepting the terms proposed for • liquidating' the £2000, awarJ, viz :—: — i £1000 to be paid during the month of I March ; £333 6s 8d by October Ist, :1887 ; 333 6s Bd, by May Ist, 1888 ; and the balance by December Ist, 1888 ; i with current rate of bank interest added until the whole be liquidated ; adding that the Council could not bind themselves to meet the payments to the very day, but every effort would be 1 made in the matter, and they expected to be able to do so. To Colonial Secretary. — Stating the terms upon which the Council had agreed to liquidate the debt of £2000 owing to Thames County by the auditor's award with respect to separation ; 'and asking that Government would assist the Council in the matter, and enable them to carry out tho arrangements entered into, by advancing the Council £1000 for a*time, wherewith to meet the first payment.
To Mr E. Edwards stating that the Council did not recognise any authority having been given him to prepare copies of the ratepayers roll. Correspondence : Inward — Tramway Connection : From Mr Alex. Hogg, applying for subsidy of £50, promised towards connecting the Monastery mine witli Railey's battery by tramway, the work had been completed at a cost of £IGB, and the writer referred the Council to the Engineer, Mr Pavitt, with respect to tho value of the work done. Cr Walsh : The Inspector of Mines, Mr Gordon, promised when here, a subsidy of £50 towards this work. Cr' Corbett : Cr Walsh is mistaken. No promise was made by Mr Gordon of any subsidy, he only promised to recommend the Minister of Mines to grant a subsidy as he thought the work deserving of assistance. The Chairman and other Councillors were of the same opinion as Ci" Corbett. Cr Moore said the Minister of Mines would shortly be in the district, when the matter could be laid before him ; and ifc was ultimately agreed to refer the matter to the Board of Works for the present. Lower Drain, Waitoa. — From settlers in the Waitoa Riding expressing regret at the delay in making the lower drain road ; the other road owing to recent fires being practically impassible. The chairman stated that the Engineer had received instructions to proceed with the work (Collet's and Thaxters contract.) Assistance to Miners.' — From Mr Greenville, applying for assistance towards putting the road to the Me and Rowe mine, Owharoa, in a passable condition as he was about taking out a crushing from this mine. Cr Moore spoke ia support of application. Resolved, that two men be put on for a week under the supervision of Mr Corbett to repair the road. Contractors Deposit — From Mr W. Barrett, requesting that his deposit of £3 be returned. Request granted. Waitawheta-Owharoa Road. — From C Franklin, drawing attention to the unsafe condition of bridges on the road between Owharoa and tho Waitewheta block, and offering to contribute in labour one- third of cost of repairing the road. Cr Moore said there were from 50 to GO gam diggers at work on this block, and the application ought to be complied with. Resolved, that £4 be expended in repairing the road, under the supervision of Cr Corbett. Tin Mines, To Aroh.i. — From E. Cameron, stating that the track leading to his clnim, the Mty Bell, was impassable, and asking that it might beiepaited as he was desirous of getting out a crushing. He estimated the cost at L 9 Crs Nicholls and Strange spoke in support of the application. Resolvod, that a sum of L 5 be granted for this purpose, to be expended under the supervision of the Engineer. Government Lend Council, LlOOO. From the Colonial Treasurer acceding to councils application for a loan of LlOOO, wherewith to pay the first instalment of the L2OOO award, duo to Thames County. Subsidies and Grants to Goldfield. — From Mr Gordon, Inspector of Mines, stating that the Minister of Mines would give the following subsidies on the L for L principle. To connect County track and minos Karaugahake, with Railey's battery, L2OO ; Tramway from minos to Martha battery, Waihi, Ll5O Also a grant of L 366 towards extension of prospecting track, Karangahake, towards Te Aroha. Hospital and Charitable Aid Board.— Cr Nicholls tendered his resignation as justice on this Board, anJ on the motion of Cr Mooro, Cr Hunphreys was appointed to succeed him. Appointment of Clerk, Treasurer, and Collector of Rates. — Twelve applications wero received for this appointment, which were opened and dealt with in committee. On the matter being brought up in Council meeting, Of Humphreys said he was desirous that it should be made public through the medium of the Press that the Council had allowed no personal feelings or interests to sway them, but they had selected the man they thought best fitted for the office, viz., Mr Napean Kenny, J.P., who was universally respected and well qualified for the duties i elating to the position. He moved that Mr Kenny be appointed at a salary of £160 per annum. Seconded by Cr Nicholls, who also spoke in high terms of Mr Kenny, and said tho position was one of the greatest importance to the county. Carried unanimously j the Council genei ally expressing satisfaction at the appointment. Mr Kenny rained as his sureties Dr Kenny, North. Shore, _A.uck land, and Mr Geo. Ed-jecumbe, Hamilton. Refusal to make Public Names of Tenderers. — The names of the other applicants not being read, application was made by the Press representatives for permission to copy them. Cr Humphreys however strongly objected to the information being given, and moved a resolution refusing the information, which was carried. Tenders. — The following tenders were opened and dealt with : — Sleepers for Tramway, Karangahake : Sorenson, Bft Gin. £8 per 100 ; sft Gin, £6 5s per 100 ; Ritchie, £6 5s per 100 all round (accepted) ; W. G. Scott, Bft, £7 10s ; sft 6in, £5 10s ; P. Mulligan, £7 7s Gd per 100 ; J. Kelly, £7 2s per 100. Repairs to Karangahake Road : Silo, £1 10s (accepted) ; W. Dodd, £8 IGa; T. M. Ritchie, £10 10s ; T. Dogberry, ,
£9 14s ; M. Coleman, £7 10s ; "JVmi Lodder, £12 ; Tlios. Cum ings, £9 10s.
