Beach and Hanla n.
From an English exchange wa take the following :— *' Edward Hanlan, the exenumpioo oarsman of the world, arrived at New York on December 20th in the i\uraoia (Cunard lino). In reply to questions H&nlan eaid : — ' I am going to Toronto to morrow night, but 1 shall stop at Montreal on tho way.' ' When do >ou expect to go to Australia?' ■ Probably in about six weeks. I *imvo co timed my visit that I will be fibwi to row bhis match with Beach without li*vif>g bson enervated by the relaxing cluunte of the antipodes.' 'la the race *cith Bsach a rertainty yet ?' * Jußt about. 1 deposited £100 before I left London aa a
forfeit on a challenge to row Beaoh on the Nepean river, in Australia, for £500 aaside and although he has not cabled his acceptance, I have an assurance that the well-known sporting man, Mr Joe Thomp* son, of Melbourne, has posted £250 forfeit on behalf of Beach for a match with mo in Australia. I certainly expect to win in the coming match, to take place next June or July, which will be winter in Australia. If Beach can defeat me ou the Nepean I should be eatfrfied that he is a better oarsman than I am. The Nepean affords an absolutely fair course.' "
