An Umbrella Story.

During the rpcent wet •.vea.ther a gentleman emerged from bis club in Piccadilly, It was pouring with rain, so he boieted his umbrella and looked abnut for n cab. Ha could not ccc an empfv one, bur ho espied a lady taking shelter in u doorway, and evidently alscT waiting for a cab. With true gallantry, he made toward her and politely offered to Lold his umbrolla over her until a cab should pa?s. The hdy agreed to share the hospitable shelter of the umbrolla, and, fo aa to eret well under it, raided her arm nearest the gentleman and with her hond assisted in holding the umbrella up. Pronently an empty four-wheeler passed. It was hailed, and pulled up ciose to where the pair stood. On reaching the cab the gentleman relinquished his hold on tbe umbrella and opened the door. As the lady prepared to enter the cab she lowered tbe umbrella and whs about to take it with her, when her companion touched it and remarked, "My umbrolla " Very softly the lady replied : " Pardon me ; mine, I think." Tbe situation was a little awkward. The rain was polting down, and tbe gentleman did not care to continue wrangling with a strange lady over theownerahip of an umbrella. So there was nothing for it but to surrender his umbrella, and resolve never again to protect a lady in the rain.
