The Aroha AND Ohinemuri News AND UPPER THAMES ADVOCATE.

•This above all — to thine own self be true ' And it must follow as the night the day, Thou<sanBt not then be false to any man.' — Shakespeare.

SATURDAY, JANUAKY 29, 1887.

Pressure on our space to-day necessitates our holding over reference to several matters of imterest. The magnificent yield from the first crushing of Adeline quartz at Kailey's Quartz R&dnction Works, Karangahake, as reported by our Ohinemuri correspondent, is newß of a most satisfactory desscription and proof of the most conclusive character^ of the value of this new plant, erected by Mr Kailey in the face of great difficulties and much to discourage, and since the plant has been completed Mr Railey has not met with such treatment as he deserved, we consider, but vrc hope that now every encouragement and iaps'stanco will be afforded him in the working of this plant by the directors * of mines in the vicinity. General regret is expressed at Te A roll a •that the Minister of Lands should have found it impossible to spare time to visit the place when travelling in the district, a« there were several matters of loc-il importance the residents desirad to bring under his notice. A special excursion train from Ancle Jand is due at To Aroha to day at 12.10 p.m. , leaving for the return journey at 5.30 p.m. The fares, 10s and 7s (>d, are ! reasonable enough in all conscience, and if tho excursion is not largely availed of the fault will not be on the score of high fares ; but we think had the return been fixed for Monday morning instead of within about live hours of arrival, the excursion would be much more popular and useful. On Thursday next Messrs AIL Bucldand and Co. will hold an important sale of horses, harness, saddlery, vehicles, etc., at Bradley and Co.'s Horse Bazaar ; for this sale some excellent horses have been entered, and a good sale ig anticipated. Also, on same occasion several epnnging cows, etc,, the property of Mrs Wain wright, will be sold without reserve. Alpo, will be offered the good-will of butcher's shop now in occupation of Mr W. Comes, and several traps and horsos, and-the Oddfellow's Hall wid Allotment, Te Arohfi.

Mr P. E. Cheat's advertisement appears in tliis issue. Mr Cheal is well-known as a first class surveyor, and we are informed is the successful tenderer for surveying; the largo areas of land recently j taken up at Waiorongonai, for mining purposes, by Messrs Firth, Ferguson, and Smith, and have staiteo on the work. We would direct attention to Mr A. \V. Edwards' now advertisement ; announcing that ho is now offering special inducements to "rmrclmsers in all departments; also the airivul of somo now lines in boots and shoe**, which are being sold much, below ordinary prices. Messrs Alf. Bnckland and Co. announce' by adveitisement in to-day's issue sales during next week as follows : Ohaupo , Cattle Sale on Tuesday next ; Waitoa live stock sale on Tlmrsda}", Feb. 3rd, for which a large number of entries have already been leceived, including somo excellent pure-bred Lincoln rains. On every hand the action oi" Conference in refusing to accept tho resignation of Rev. T. J. Wills, and instead striking his n nno oft' the books, after go- (number of years faithful service, because he refused to submit 'to what he considered a great injustice, is characterised as hars>h and arbitrary in the extreme. Mrs Srditho and jV'iss ILirtley notify , dissolution of partnership. Tho reversion of To A roll. i Public Library peiiodicals, etc., will be sold by Mr > J. F. Cocks to-day. To Aroha members of the School of Mines are requested to pay their subsciiptions to Mr G-. Wilson. Tho Waikato Hospital and Charitable Aid Board advertise for a secretary and treasurer. Applications will be received till noon on Tuesday next. The forfeiture of several licensed hold- , ings at Waihi and Karangahake are advert ised. \ Visitors' List.— Hot Springs Hotel, Visitors List for week ending Jan. 28th : Mrs and Miss Kelly, Mrs Rees, Miss Harley, Mrs Koala, Miss Hills, Master Harding, Mr J Orchiston, Mrs Smith, Mr and Mrs J D Foloy, Mr Lawson, Mr Moss Davis, Miss O'Dowd, Mr, Mrs, and Master Wollains, Mrs Parieh, Mr Bridgewater, ', Mr H Chamberlin, M.L.C., Mr E T Hart, Mr J. Broomsgrove, Mrs and Miss Iloywood, Miss Chceseholm, Auckland ; Mr R Levier. Nelson ; Mr H A Eweo, Cartel - ton ; Mr Clements, Karangahake ; Mr Win. Tho school re-opens on Monday 31st inst. Miss Gibbons has been removed to Thames, and the vacancy thus caused will be filled by Miss Eliza Reid, from Auckland, a pupil teacher of tho third year. It will be seen by reference to our report of last Piako CountyConncil meeting, that it is proposed to lease tho countytiam way. This is a matter of much intereat to this district, and we shall refer to it at an early dute. Woodroffe'.s Glass Blowing entertainment at the Te Aroha Public Hall on Monday and Tuesday last was largely , patronised, and all spectators appeared . highly pleased. Piako County Council notify by advertisement, the levying of a special rate of -[ in the Ju on the Aroha Hiding. Ohinemuri County Council invite tenders by advertisement for various road works. Harvesting in the Waitoa district is now well forward, and will practically be over by the end of next week. The crops on the whole arc- reported to be satisfactory. Mr J. I). Smith has 200 acres of white oats this season, also a quantity of wheat and barley. On last Saturday night the train ran down two cows, between Morrinsville and Te Aroha, which had strayed on tothc line both received broken legs by the contact, and had to be killed. A lady resident at To Aroha, recently received a letter from her nephew at Kimberley, kindly placed it at our disposal, and by permission we publish tho following extracts. The letter is dated Kimberley Goklfield, Western Australia, October Uth, 188G : . . . . « I expect the heading takes you by surprise. I must admit that like a great many more young fools, I was luted away with glowing reports. New Zealand has, lam sorry to say, suffered more from this rush than my of the other colonies. I find that 50 per cent of the whole of the men come from there ; and over 90 per cent of them are going back destitute, while there are over 10 that I know of, who have left their bodies behind. They cannot stand the climate or food ; while we Queenslanders are itsed to both. I have had splendid health ever since I came here, while men have been sick and dying all round me. This is without exception, the biggest fraud that ever existed 1 it is a downright swindle from start to finish. It has been got up by the Steamboat Companies, and the storekeepers up here. I havo been very lucky so far, (at any rate I am considered so),I have been here over nine weeks and working hard all the time, for the large amount of 6£ ounces of gold. I think I can safely say that not one man in a thousand, has managed to clear his rations, while not one in five thousand has cleared his expenses. I intend to stay here for the wet season, in case anything new is found " A correspondent in the Wakatipu Maisigning himself " Qui Vive," writes as follows on the chlorination-process of gold saving . — 1 discrrssed tho process often with the inventor, Mr Vautin, at the Hodgkinson, North Queensland, when he was assaying there, but at that time I thought it too expensive to be brought into genera* use. But things have changed since then, and besides the process has been perfected and simplified, and no doubt in the near future this process will prove tha very perfection of a go'dsaver, and indeed, it is now being brought into u«e by tiome of the leading mines of Charters Towers and Rockhampton, Queensland. Chlorination, coupled with with the roller mills for reducing quartz, will tend to revolutionise mining all over the world, and quite, do away with the ordinary stumper batteries, and the use of mercury for gold-saving purposes altogether.
