OHINEMURI. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Paeroa, Friday.
At a meeting or the Jraeroa township leaseholders held last week, it was resolved to ask for a 21 years' extension of lease instead of 30 years, so as, to comply with the conditions of the Act relating to Native land reserves. During the present week the leaseholder:: have all signed a document appointing Mr J A Miller, Thames,as their solicitor, to prepare the necessary leases, etc., preparatory to making final arrangements about same. . . The annual meeting of shareholders in the Paoroa Public Hall took place on Monday evening last, when the balancesheet and leport were read and adopted. The balance-sheet .showed that a dividend of one shilling per scrip on 462 shares had been declared as the result of tho year's takings, leaving a fair balance in hand. The following gentlemen were elected a committee for the ensuing year, viz, : Messrs Robson (chairman ), Phillips (sec), Mitchell, Shaw, Mooru. Cock, and Barrett. It was also resolved to advertise for a caretaker, and tho committee was instructed to take too nccoss'iry stops to secure an extension of lease for the allotments upon which tho hall is creeled, and forming the propeity into a company will be next in the oidor of tilings. At n the next sitting of the Police Court here, a settler named Matthew lvinsclla will bo charged with having assaulted a Maori on the Waihl road. It stated that tho father of tho native iv question is indebted to KiiiFclla in a certain sum of money which the latter failed to obtain by moral suasion, and, not being able to find the old man readily, he tackled tho son, whemhe handled rather roughly. Mr Kinsella, who h a very old settler, beais an excellent reputation ; and those who know him best were very much surprised upon learning the nature of the charge that has been preferred against him. The natives living at Haora Tai'oranui's settlement have arranged at: excellent progiammc for a race meeting which comes off to-morrow. Alth-ja^k the prizes are small, there will bo bij/ fields for every event, and a good day'd sport is anticipated.
KAUANGAHAKE. "Work has been resumed in a good number of the mines in this neighbourhood, but there still is a large aret ol groan J unoccupied ; and there is bnc small chance of a re-action in the present dull state of affairs unless we can attract some of the English capital which is now flowing so freely into ofchei mining centres. Railey's plant has no-, yet resumed work, and it is stated somo financial complications have arisen in connection therewith.
Arrangements are now in progress fo-" letting iialph's mine and battery o\\ tribute, and it is expected that this con • cern will again be in full operation very shortly. Binuy and party have taken the Welcome mine on tribute for a term of two years, and they will commence active operations' early next week.
WiJHI. Developemcnts are still progressing in the Union, Winner, Rosemont, and Sttverton mines, and there is a very good show of gold bearing stone in the winze which is now dewn to a depth of 85ft beneath the low level in the last mentfone'd rairie. In the meantime there is no woiigoing on in the Martha mine, and the water supply for battery purposes is far short of requirements.
OWHAROA. Tlupgs generally here are of the fiat, stale, and unprofitable order, but there are several parties of tributers at work in the Smile of Fortune mine, and therefore someting of importance may be dropped on at any moment.
