The system ot protection inaugurated by Germany ha-< h*d its followers, and our industries wh eh exi&t by exportation iind their oufci< tn closed. Chemnitz,— The recoil in business i 3 due to the system of protection which has induced reprisals. German i>.du-"hien are now in the moat, deplorable stare, business has been slowly paralysed, r*n(> the improvement hoped for will not be realised Hanau. — The present year is wnr^e than the past ; importation is reduced to a minimum in consequence of the high duti h, Tne deplorable result of this state of things is that stocks are constantly increasing both in the hands of manufacturers and merchants Darmstadt. — The production is excessive and the consumption reduced, high foreign duties exclude Ger man produce, and the consumption is diminish' d by the depreciation of capital and the lowering of interest. We must absolutely abandon this war of tariffs and return to commercial treaties. Corlsriche. — Business *is in an anxious state, and the insecurity caused by the high duties makes the manufacturers despair, and inflicts great harm on industrial pursuits. Ctefeld. — Protection has not increased home consumption of the national product, and has diminished the foreign demand. Exposition bm-omes yearly more difficult. Tn'i Khine industries are mostly opposed to the increase of Custom duties. Coblentz. -There is an unprecedented depreciation in moat of the products of the soil. Protective duties have not been in any way profitable to them. Heidenheim. — Exportation continues to diminish. Judicious treaties of commorce instead of high duties can alone bring about any improvement. Reutlingen makes the same remark. Another Chumber of Commerce speaks of the disappointments of manufacturers, and says that in all parts of Germany opinions are openly expressed against the commercial policy and the tariff of the Empire."
We know a vpry ugly and penurious man who works in his own fields in the summer months to nave the expense of a scarecrow. He sent two shillings for a lightning ear-wig-killer, and received by return mail two blocks of wood, with directions printed on them as follows : " Take this block, No. 1, in tho right band ; place the earwig on No. % and press them together, Remove the insect and proceed as before,
