ENGLISH POLITICAL CRISIS. Mr Gladstone and Home Rule.
London, January 9bh. It is announced that Lord Salisbury will replace the Earl of lddesleigh as Secretary of State of Foreign Aff drs. Ifc has not. yefc been decided who phall succeed Mr Edward Stanhope as Secretary of State tor the Colonies. The Earl of Cadogar has been mentioned as likely to accept thac portfolio. The " Times ' considers that Sir H. T. Holland, VicePresident of the Council, is preferable for this post, and it regrets that Mr Stanhope was transferred. It is announced that Lord Cross has reconsidered his decision to resign, and has consented to retain the position of Secretary of State for India. The "Daily Naws" of yesterday publishes an article denying the statement made by the "Standard" that Mr Gladstone was inclined to modify hia Home Rule for Ireland scheme, with a view to conciliate the Unionist Liberals. It is announced that Sir Henry Holland has been appointed Secretary of State for the Colonies. Tho Hon. Henry S f aflbrd Northcote, son of the Earl of Iddesleigh, has resigned the appointment as Financial Secretary to the Surveyer-Generai of Ordnance.
