We •honld feel much more inclined to advocate the loan had the Gordon nottlera shown a greater disposition Co settle on the land now ac^)rjlby_titemJpt.?Anietime past. As regards the proposed road being a means of attracting toimst , traffic via Matatnata, the making the road to'Taoranga, ~vFb Katikati "available for coach traffic is a matter of greater consequence to Te Aroha. Then again the amount proposed to be j)or- s rowed to as seems entirely inadequate to making, bridging, and partially metalling, » good road for a distance of twelve to fifteen miles, and we fear the expenditure would not stop at £1500, but that farther large sums would be required to properly complete the work. With respect to the ratepayers within the proposed Town District or Borough boundaries being only liable for such proportion of the money as could be expended within their district, there ii no guarantee that they would be only liable to this extent, ibe ratepayers having one? rendeied themselves liable as a .whole for the repayment of the )oan. It would be a matter for adjustment in the event of a Town District .or Borough being constituted, and the AuditorGeneral could be appealed to, but ' his decision might not be any more satisfactory to T« Aroha ratepayers than was the recent award between Thames and Ohinerauri Counties to Ohinemuri ratepayers. We have felt it onr duty to place these few facts before our readers, and how leave them todecideand abide by Wednesday's poll.

With reference to certain statements made by Mr Mills in his letter to the Colonial Secretary which appears in our column! to-day^ ye may say on being- enquiredioto they appear to be utterly false. Mr G. Bobson who took the petition to Mrs Frazer to sign nerer mentioned auch a thing &a that Mr Frairar had sent him. Mrs Frazer, Mrs Wilson, and < Mrs v Faes, all signed the petition of their own free will, whilst Mrs goody's, njuxa^tpa* not on the petition at ati. With respect to Mr Q. Devey, jun., hq signed the petitionj together with his father and Mr Jess Devey (hi« uncle), in the presence of each other, the signatures being witnessed by Mr Ijott. and further has since told Mr Ifcebson that, he never uttered euch words as Mr Mills states' in his letter* .Mr Vause has since the enquiry also told Mr Kobson, who witnessed his signature^ he never told Mr Mills he signed the petition through misrepresentation of its object. Mr O'Connor alco informed Mr Robson the statement made ia Mr MilU's letter respecting him was entirely false. This is, a nioe speci men of the totally unjustifiable chargessome times laid against others hy those who are not over careful as to what they Bay, if thereby they can but gain the end they have in view, and Mr Mills's endeavour to upset the Town Board* petition will be productive of good, if alone its being the means of this letter of his being made public^ Quf readers will form their own conclusions with" respect to his' conduct in dealing thus with other people's names. . Preparations are being made to give all the children of Te Aroha a general treat on New YearsVday. A cotnmitte has been formed of representatives from the various schools (both Sunday and Day.) Subscription lists -are now open and already a large sum has been collected, so thslt if the weather* should prove fine ,'the youngsters may look forward to a regular gala day on the Ist of the new year.' Phillips, jun ; Morrinsville: do., Mr Warren ; Waitoa, do , Mr Ross - t Shaftesbury, do., MrlJJehirose,; Buttle was appointed district delegate to conference. Considerable discussion took place with respect to the Circuit inviting a married minister for the ensuing year, and it was ultimately decided Hint it would be well for tbe Circuit to accept its responsibility, in this respect and that a married man' be invited provided conference would assist the stipend fund by a grant of not less than £40. General satisfaction was exSressed with the new Minister, Rev. T. A. oughin, who received a hearty invitation to remain another year in the event of conference not appointing a married man, There was a small deficit on the balance sheet of the quarter, which it was agreed to allocate amongst the different centres and raise by subscription. Next quarterly meeting will be held at Paeroa. It was decided to try and re-establish services at regular intervals at Waiorongomai. Those present after the meeting was over, were most hospitably entertained by Mr and Mrs Buttle. A cricket match which will have considerable local interest has been arranged for New Year's Day ; between an eleven from Te Aroha and an eleven cadtained by Mr J. B. Sirqith. The match will' be played at Mr Smith's " farm at Waitoa, play to commence at 11 a.m. It, will be observed by advertisement that the local branch of tho Bank of l^ow Zealand will bo closed on next Saturday and Monday. Great cffoits are being made in Auck land to raise funds for the ro-erection : o£ St. Benedict's Church. Aid is sought from all sections "of the community, and Bishop Luck on Friday asked the Mayor (Mr Devore) to preside at a public meeting in connection^ .with the nritter. Tha Mayor declined, as the question was not a public one. He, however, asked the bishop whether, supposing the church hud been a Protestant one the members of 'the Church of Rome would contribute. The bishop said the cases were different. His Church did not object ro receive assistance from those outside the Faith, but they could give anything in aid of other religions on principle. A controversy on the subject has commenced in the Auckland papers, the effect of which will be to prevent many " outside the Faith" from contributing* — Waikoto Times. A special meeting of the Gotdon special settlers is convened for next Thursday evening at Waiorongomai. See advt, The Ohinemuri Licensing Bench, adjourned from tha 4th inst., sat on Saturday last to hear applications from Messrs Ilosie, McGeelun, and Cummings respectively, for an accommodation license at Owharoa. Mr T. M< Humphreys appeared for Mr McQeehan, and after a lengthy consideration and discussion, the Chairman ruled that under section 55 of the "Licensing Act, 1881/' no new license could be granted at other than the annual sitting in June. j Our usual letter from Ohinemuri correspondent has not reached us* this week. , The Christmas Tree and Gift Auction entertainment in aid of St. Joseph's Church, Te Aroha, which came off in ,the Te Aroha Public Hall on Tuesday last was most successful. , The attendance was large throughout, during the ovening ithe hall was well filled ; the Te Aroha Brass Band enlivening the proceedings by playing selections.
