AN ATLANTIC AND MEDITERRANEAN CANAL.
M. »n Frktcinet's visit to the south, cay& the London " Daily News," will be the occa« sion for a movement in favour of a canal across Gascony and Languedoc to connect the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. The Gironde from Boideaux to the mouth of that river -would serve as the western end of the projected waterway. The eastern opening would be at Narbonne. A petition, largely signed, has been presented to the Foreign Minister, who when Minister of Public Works was in favour of the creation of such a canal. M. de Freycinet set this project on foot under the Euapire When he waa Under Secretary of War at Tours and Bordeaux, he and Gatnbetta often spoke of the strategical advantages which such a waterway would give France. Had ib existed in 1870 they both agreed that any invasion, \however formidable, from Germany could have been successfully resisted. As a commercial speculation there is no doubt that it would be a great success. Such a canal might be regarded as a prolongation of the Suez. o
