Destructive Fire at Dunedin. Loss, £18,000.

Dunedin*, November 6. A TiAiwiE wooden goodshed opposite the Union Company's office was burned to the ground at nino last night, The fire must have been smouldeiing ineide unnoticed probably for hours, for although it was only obaorved a few minutes before 9, tho whole shed from end to end was soon ablaze. A quarter of an hour after the outbreak the shod was one mass of flame, and from that time forward sections of Ihe roof foil in at intervals, leaving the upright standing- along row of burning sticks. As theso gradually fell, the double row of inside bricks became visible. They were burning fiercely, and it was plainly hopeless from the outset to save any °of the contents. There waa a pleasant breeze blowiug, just pufiicient to assiat mat ters, and tho flames travelled from the southorn to the northern shed with wonderful rapidity. By 10 pm. the worst mischief was over, and in an hour all that remained of a ehed which cost £3,000 was an array of charred and smouldering uprights. Twelve loaded trucks were destroyed. The shed was used as an export shed, but the bulk of the goods contained in it previous to firo had been removed on Saturday night, The value of the goods destroyed is variously eatiinatod. The principal loses are Wright, Stephenson and Co , who hand forty baits of wool and f other goods lost, reproeenting a loss of about £15,000, including trucks. Of this loss, only £S,OOO is covered by insurance.

When a candidate places himself in the handa of his friends, he had better lock up his pocket-book. "But, Emma, how can you prefer the plain and shabbily dressed Julius to my elegant and handsome brother?" *' That is quite simple ; your brother is in love with

himself and Julius with me." Oscar Wildo says he writes poems on an empty stomach. Esthetic, no doubt, but ordinary people will use a desk.
