UNDER THE MISSISSIPPI. The Timely Rescue of Fifteen Imprisoned Workmen.
A thrilling accident, imperiling the lives of fifteen men, occurred at the New XJpiott Pacific bridge which is boing builfc to replace the old structure across the Missouri Kiver at Omaha. At 10 o'clock a leak was snrnngin the cai^on now being constructed in the middle of the river and before it could be corked it had filled the shaft up to th© surface, thus cutting off the escape of the fifteen men who were at work on the bedrock: under the bottom of the river. The news of tho hoirible situation rapidly spread, and soon thousands assembled* on the shore to await the result of the efforts to rescue the imprisoned men. George Ledderlee, chief engineer in charge of the work, and his as sistant Ralph ftlodjsska, son of the actress^ hastened to the caiseion an 3 at once proceeded to direct affairs. The pier ia a mammoth atone structure, sixty feet long and twenty five feet wide. Its surface is now five feet above the water and its base rests on the bedrock eeventy-three feet below the river. The engineers ran an engine with pumps attached to the pier and set to work pumping the water from the> shaft. After working an hour it was found that the engine waB inadequate to exhauet the water in timeto save the men's lives. A bucket brigade was then organised among the bridge employes, who with ropes and buckets slowly bailed the water out of the shaft. At about 3 o'clock the water was exhausted and the men were rescued in art exhausted and frightened condition.' When they were brought out wild cheers went up from the crowd on the levee*
