Xixw Yokk, October 23.— Severe shocks of earthquake were experienced yesterday and this morning at Charleston, South Carolina, and extending through tho States of Georgia and Florida. Much damage has been done to property and eeveral persona have been injured by the earthquake?. London, October 21.— The Duke of Manchester has c m plained that the IMnce of Wales is ignoring the Colonial Institute in aonnection wi'h his Imperial Institute scheme. It is estimated that one-half of the Scottish wheat crop is hopelessly damaged. A league has been formed in Newcastle, HSnsrland, with the object of securing the establishment of the principle of eight hoars' labour, and it is intended to carry on the agitation throughout the country. Lord Derby, speaking at Liverpool, predicted an early and a rapid revival in trade. Loxjdoit, October 20.— The Australian Mutual Shipping Co. has been registered, with a capital of £100.000, a third of which has been reserved for the colo' onies. It is intended to charge similar rates for freight, etc., as the shipping ring. A meeting of the colonial Agents-General and the members 51 the City Corporation tow held at the Mansion House to-day, in connection with the proposed Imperial In> stitue. The Lord Mayor, who was ptwent, suggested that the Institute should be erected upon the site, and conduced on the lines of the present Colonial and Indian Exhibition, Thi? \raa unanimously approved by the meeting, and it was decided that the Lord Mayor should convene a public meeting to give effect to these proposals. Lovdon t , October 24. — It is doublful if the Roumelian deputies will voto for a succe?sor to Prince Alexander. Rangoon, October 20.— General Sir Herbert Macpherson, Commander of the British forces in Burmah, died today of faver at Prome, on the Irrawaddy, Calcutta, October 25.— Sir West Hideaway, the Commander of the British portion of the Afghan Boundary Commission, has arrived at Cabul, where he was most cordially received bv the Amper. October 25.— Sir Frederick Roberts, who ha« been appointed to the -command of the British forces in Burmah, has been accredited with special powprs for the administration of the affairs of that country.
