CAPTURE OF JEWELLERY ROBBERS.
A daring robbery of jewellery was committed at the shop of Mr Philip Blashki, Bourke-street East, on Friday morning last;, and a very clever arrest was made the following morning. Thei police arrested several suspects for vagrancy, and oa clues obtained from then* proceeded to the Albion Hotel. Chapelstreet, Prahran, and asked it a man named Omond was in the house. In a small single, bedded room upstairs Omond was found asleep. Budely awakened by a loud knocking at the dor before 6 o'clock, he demanded to know the cause of the intrusion. When taxed with having bought^ 1 on the previous 'day several gold chains, section. I saidj " Let me search you." I then searched him. I found nothing on him. X searched his swag and found a eix-cham* bered revolver (loaded) and 11 cartridges, I also produce a parallel rule, a purse with 9? and 9d in money, and a cheijuo for £2, 9, gold ring (snake pattern with two heads), a> piece ot black 9atin, which bears needle n^a k*. I notice the initials "L.B "in ink on a brass hin^e of tho parallel rule. The swag generally consists of blankets, sea boots, socks, and (apparently) a sailor's kit. It was fastened with a piece of rope. I took poeea?ion of these things, and then arrested the prisoner on suspicion. X said to him, "I arrest you on suspicion of being John Caffrey, charged, on warrant, with the murder of Robert Taylor, at Great Barrier Island, New Zealand, on the 19tbt June last. ' He made no reply. 1 handcuffed Mm. I wish to add that at the time I found the revolver I said, *' What do you* call this?" showing him tho weapon. He replied, " I was told I might want that on the diggings." I then brought him to th.§ Boat Harbour lock - up. I asked the prisoner if ha had been in New Zealand, andi if he knew a vessel named the Sovereign of the Seas. He replied in the negative.*. He said the black satin was given to him, by a man to make a taah nith. I produce the *' Police Gazotte " of 7th July la&t, ia which, a notice of the murder and the de^ pcription of two person? named Joha Caffrey and Henry Albert Perm.is printe,d v I believed the accused to be isentical wiitu John Caffrey. His ears aie pierced, though he haa no, earrings. I pray for a remand for further, inquiries. The warrant for the arrest of the persons charged with tho crime not having arrived from New Zealand, where the offence was committed, the man John Caffrey was. remanded until Monday next. It was the?, intention of the Inspector-General to have, sent Caffrey to New Zealand under escort* to morrow, but the news of Perm's arrest* having arrived it was decided to forward, a cablegram requesting the New Zealand authorities to forward a sufficient escort for both prisoners. Some additional evidence may be taken on Monday next.
