THE TIMARU POISONING CASE.
(Continued from last week.) CHRISTCHURGH, October 15. Until wesee to whatusetheexpert witnesses are to be put by the defence it is impossible to say when the]trial w ill conclude. Should Professors Black and Ogston be disposed of to-day it may be reasonably inferred that the case for the Crown will be brought to a close on Saturday, but should the crossexamination a8 to the teats be inordinately long, it may be the middle of next week before the defence will be reached. So far no clue has been given as to the defence to be set up; indeed, there is room to doubt whether, on the part of the male prisoner, there be any ; and it seems that Mr Joynt is undecided whether he will call witnesses. lam informed, however.) that Dr. Duthio, of Christchurch, on behalf ot the defence, examined Mrs Hall at Woodlands a day or two ago, and as the Attorney-General has intimated his intention of claiming his right to reply, nothing is to be gained by not calling any available avidence that, may prove of the slightest advantage> Both of the accused continue to bear a calm demeanour— Hall especially being marvellously cool, and occupying his time by comparing the evidence now given with the depositions made at the preliminary investigation. At a late period of the proceedings of yesterday, 1 Hall'a counsel complained that he was suffering from sickness, and asked thai he be ' allowed to sit — a request that His Hooor readily complied with, seeing that Ball had been standing in the dock the whole time since the commencement of the trial.
