Result of the Caulfield Guineas. (REUTERS TELEGRAM.)

Melbourne, October 9. The Caulfield Guineas was run this after** noon, with the following result: —

Caulfield Guineas.—A sweepßtakea o£ lOsovseach, 5 ft., with 300sovs added.. For foals of 1883, then three-year-old. The* second horse to receive 75sovs. t andthe> third horse 25sova from the stake. Clarkes b c First Consul, by Gang Forward —Josephine 3. Also ran : Donald, Retort, Gadfly, Blair* gowrie, and Cheeham. Volcano was the* first to get away. Maddelina , being laat«. The former led until entering the straight* when Maddelina assumed the lead, and a, splendid finish home resulted. Wearing 1 home, First Consul came with a great rush,, but only succeeded in gaining third place* Time, lmin. 46secs. Immediately after the conclusion of the race, a protest waa lodged against Maddelina, but was diamissed. [Maddelina, the winner, was bred in Adelaide, and last season proved herself a very brilliant two-year-old. She won seren. races out of the fifteon she started in, including the V.R.C. Wormanby Stakes,, Sires' Produce Stakes, and All-aged Stakes. Among those she defeated in the two lastrnamed events was Trident, the Derby favourite ]
