New Zealand Horses for the Indian Market.
It is satisfactory to notice that the s.s. Triumph, which has recently sailed from Lyttleton for Calcutta, haß on boax-d 241 horses shipped from Christchurch on account of John Griggs, Hawkers, and Jarvis. These horses, intended for the Indian market, are said to be of a stamp well Buited for army purposes, or for buggy and dog-cart work, and are a sound useful looking lot of animals. We have referred on previous occasions to the market offered by India to New Zealand breeders of* torses, and trust that the present shipment may prove the beginning of a regular trade. One of the first steps to be taken with this object would be to get a clear idea of the general type of animal required by the army authorities in India, and also the kind of horses found to be most useful In that country for the ordinary work of private people. Breeders should then work on definite lines to produce the kind of horse required as nearly as possible. There is perhaps no climate in the world better fitted for the breeding of horses than that of New Zealand. Australia has perhaps some advantages in extent of native* pasturage, but the liability to severe droughts, and the general scarcity of water there compared with this colony will always be in our favour.
