The Aroha AND Ohinemuri News AND UPPER THAMES ADVOCATE.

1 This above all— to thine own self be true And it must follow as the night the day, Thou canst not then be false to any man.' — Shakespeare.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 25, 1886.

Some important letters to the Editor re the Te Aroha Domain, and baths will be found in this issue. Dr Erson (who came to Te Aroha for his health sake, and who proposes remaining; till the latter part of next week) has formed a very high opinion of the baths, and in his letter gives some excellent suggestions. Mr J. M. Robson, chairman of the Paeroa Leaseholders' Committee, has received a letter from Mr Commissioner Barton stating that the restrictions on the township will shortly be removed, so as to admit of an amicable arrangement being entered into between the Native owners and occupiers, with a view to granting n 1301 30 years extension of the present term of lease, which expires four years hence. At the Paeroa public school yesterday, being the commencement of tho Michaelmas holidays, Mrs Sullivan, . who has resigned }ier position as pupil teacher, was presented with a handsome silver teapot as a token o£ respect and regard from her late pupils. Master \V. Simmons, one of the advanced pupils attending the Waiokaraka School, Thames, has been appointed to fill the vacancy occasioned by Mrs Sullivan's resignation. In response to a letter from the chairman of the Ohinemuri County Council, Mr E. Menzies, sec, of the New Zealand Smelting Company, recently forwarded that gentlemen a complete return of the quartz from Ohinemuri County? smelted at the Thames furnace, viz : from the following mines, Crown, Rose, Kenilworth, (2 lots) Shepherd and Co., Waitekauri, Adeline, Union Co , . Eosemont, (2 lots) Silveiton and Rose. The total quantity of quartz being 140 tons, 3 cwt ; weight of gold 5970z 12 dwt, 19 grs, value £2372 16s ; silver 25810z 17d\vts 15grs, value, £516 6s 4d. Grand tetal £2889 3s 2d. The chairman then wrote to the bank manager at Thames, requesting to be furnished with a copy of the declaration made with respect to this gold. The reply sent was that it was returned as fiom Thames Borough. The reason for these enquiries being made is that the Ohinemuri County has never received the gold duty. It appears a most unreasonable and arbitrary arrangement that because the quartz happened to be smelted at the Thames, the return should state it was from Thames, and thus Ohinemuri County lose the duty. The Rev. Edward Best, from Thames, will preach to-morrow both morning and evening in the Wesleyan Church, Te Aroha. This announcement, we are sure will be the means of drawing large congregationb on both occasions, as the Rev. gentleman is well known as an earnest and eloquent preacher cf the gospel. MiBest will also be invited to address the Sunday School children in the afternoon. Constable Mitchell, late of Paeroa, is about to be transfered to Whakatane. On Monday afternoon next the quarterly meeting of the Wesleyan Upper Thames circuit, will be held at Te Aroha. Rev. Edw. Best from Thames, will preside. It is intended to hold a Masonic Ball next month at Te -Aroha. Mr J. Heathcote's tender has been accepted by Mr C. Balcke, of Te Aroha for the erection of a four room house, Lipsey's Block, Te Aroha, the price being we understand £1 14. The framing is now up ; and the work proceeding rapidly. Professor Lio Medo, during his stay at Paeroa was in great request, a large number of charts being ordeied, phrenological examinations made, etc. Good houses also were present at his entertainments in the Public Hall, and in fact, the Professor is stated to have taken a good sum in Ohinemuri. A young man named Robert Gk Gibson was taken ill suddenly a few days feince at Karangahake with violent spasms. His mother and brothel 1 from Thames arrived at Karangahake on Tuesday. It was decided to take him home at once, his mates kindly undertaking to carry him to Paeroa to the steamer. We woiild direct special attention to t forthcoming- important sales by Messrs ! Alf. Buckland and Co. This day at Cambridge sale of produce, furniture, horses and cattle, etc. On Tuesday at Ohaupo, over 300 head of cattle^ (and on same day i at Ohaupo will be held the usual parado of stallions), On Thursday next 30th | inst, at 1 o'clock, the opening of the new cattle yards at Morrinsville will take place. The sale promises to be a most important one, as already 500 head of: cattle have been entered, most o£ which tire of a very superior class. Also same time several draught horses, ploughs, posts, etc. From the Ivanhoe battery, Karangahake a sample parcel of about scwt of tailings is about to be treated at Thames by the new process lately erected by Messrs Heighway and Bull.

Mr C. Gallagher, Te Aroha, is adding several 'rooms to liis house, which is situated close to the Domain . Bow windows are heing placed in the front room, large verandah erected and other extensive alterations made, Mr Q. Devey being the contracted * Next meeting of creditors in the estate of Jas Warren Bankrupt, Te Aroha, will he held at the office of the Official Assignee, Auckland on Monday next. Mr J. F. Cocks announces his monthly sale of produce, furniture etc., at Te Aroha) this day. Also, special unreserved sale at Waihou on Monday next of f urniture and 'effocts, freehold allotment and cottage, etc., the property of Mrs Moffatt. Miss Bluck advertises having for sale settings of eggs, of the pure Plymouth Rock, prize strain. Usual monthly meeting of Piako County Council at Hamiltion on Wednesday next. Many of the natives have been busily employed of late preparing for the potato j planting. Tho^e living at the Te Aroha Pah, have already a good deal of ploughing done ; whilst Tamati and a number of others have, in a most creditable manner, fenced (post and 3 rails) in some 20 to 30 acres on the lower side of the Paeroa road, at the foot of the llotokuhu gorge, and are now clearing and burning same, after which it will bo ploughed, and as much as possible planted with potatoes this season. It is pleasant to see the native owners of tho soil displaying such practical interest in the improverneni of their lands ; and we trust their laboui will be amply rewarded by good crops. An improver to the blacksmith business is advertised for. Ohinemuri county council give notice that all rates unpaid after 30th inst, will be sued for. Messrs Wells and Soutter give notice by advertisement relative to the payment of accounts due them. The opening of the new cattle sale yards at Morrinsville on Thursda}' next, is a matter of great interest to settlers in this and surronnding districts. Morrinsville situated as it is right in the heart oi a fine agricultural country, and being t railway junction, naturally should be t grand site for cattle sales. The new yards are excellently situated, being right ir the township, and close to the railway station. Both the well known firms oJ Messrs Buckland and Co., and Hunter and Co., have arranged to hold periodical sales in thes« yards ; Messrs Buckland and Co, leading off with the sale on Thursday next ; on which occasion wt hope to see a very large and representative gathering. Applications for the following village special settlement sections, suburbs of Te Aroha, have been accepted, viz*, No. 53 70, 71, 72, 73, 74, 75. Mr Stratford, R.M., wired Constable Mitchell at Paeroa on Wednesday to ascertain whether he would prefer remaining at that place to the proposed transfer to Whakatane. In view of the increased remuneration, Mr Mitchell replied that he would prefer Wakatane. On Monday evening next a soiree and concert in aid of the funds of the Upper Thames Wesleyan Circuit, will be held in the Te Aroha Public Hall. We understand an attractive programme has been arranged for, and we hope that a very large gathering will be present on the occasion, and that the result will be a substantial addition to the circuit funds, which we believe are at rather a low ebb. For particulars see advt. Keports to hand from the Waikato state that Te Tawhiao, heir apparent to the Maori throne, is now lying very ill at Whiatiwiahoe, his recovery being doubtful. The young chief is a general favourite among both natives and Europpeans He sacjly needsmedical attendance. Tawhiao is away on the East Coast, but the natives think of taking Te Tawhiao to Te Aroha if possible to move him. We would direct attention to the advertisement in this issue, inviting tenders for conveyance of mails for ensuing two years, in this and surrounding districts. I?orms of tenders, and further particulars are obtainable at the various post offices. Messrs Comes Bros., Te Aroha, lost a horse this week, through it is stated ita having eaten some poisoned oats. Messrs Comes and West's tender for the erection o£ stabling, etc., in connection with the Hot Springs Hotel, Te Aroha, i has been accepted ; price, £171 ss.
