GOLD IN THE KING COUNTRY. Te Awamutu, September 22.

Mr Bridgman desires to state in explanation of the report of gold having been brought in from the King Country that it is incorrect as far as his knowledge goes, though several months ago a man did show him very rich specimens, positively stating that they were obtained in the King Country ; but the qaartz was unlike the class of ore Mr Bridgman had seen, and he declined to make the cash advance which the person wanted. Mr Bridgman is, nevertheless, satisfied that payable gold will yet be discovered, and has been engaged practically testing certain ground, having sunk a shaft near the bed of an old mighty river which is< believed to have flowed ages since, bringing in its course large quantities of quartz and pebbles, through which drift tne shaft is going down ; but owing to the flow of water the work has been stopped. Operations will be resumed in the summer with improved appliances, when it is hoped Mr Bridgman will bottom on a vein of gold and give Waikato a fresh atart.

LATER. I have obtained several pieces of quartz from the King Country, and also a little gold from quarts brought by a native from the interior, but I have no guarantee as to where the native got his quartz from.
