SALE OF ART TREASURES.
Seventeen Paintings by Rubens Disposed of in One Day. The final dispersion of the treasures of Blenheim Palace began on July 24th at Christie and Mansona's auction rooms. The list of seventeen pictures by JRut>ene, also the last sale for the day, -was a magnificent '' Venus and Cupid Endevouring to Restrain adonis Lorn the Chase" Ie was applauded, started at £5,000, and quickly sold to Agnew for £36,000 after rapid and high bidding. All the experts and dealers I saw at the sale agreed the prices were much lower than was expected, fully 50 per cent below in ■many cases. Murray, a dealer who bought many Rubens and other fine canvasses, said he bought exclusively for private persons. Agnew, also a large buyer, said jbe bought only to resell on speculation. Some pictures were bought for foreign galleries. Colnaghi said that some of the JUibenees sold to day were the gems of the 'Blenheim collection, but the sales to follow during the summer and fall contain many almost equally fine paintings.
