Mr Trevelyan Defeated London, July 10.
The Marquis of Hartington has been reelected for Kosendale in Lancashire, and Mr Leonard Courtney ha» been re-elected for Bodmin. Mr G. O. Trevelyan, who in March last resigned the position of Secretary for Scotland in Mr Gladstone's Government, has been defeated for Hawick by a Gladstonite canaidate. Mr Joseph Arch, labour candidate, and Mr Timothy Healy, Nationalist, have been defeated for North-west Norfolk and Londonderry reepectively. The whole of the elections for the English borough seats are now completed. The lifet shows that in the metropolis 49 Conservatives, 2 Unionists, and 11 Gladstonites were elected ; and that outside the metropolis 144 Conservatives, 22 Unionists, and 60 Gladstonites were returned. Up to the present time 714 000 ayes and 775,000 noes have been recorded for and against Mr Gladstone in constituencies which, at the general election in November last, had given him a majority of 73,000 votes. Sir John Lubbock (London University), the Hon. D. Plunkett (Dublin University), and the Hon. H. Holmes (Dublin University), have been re-elected members of the House of Commons. Mr Gladstone denies a statement made to the effect that he had received a suggestion from Irish Americans regarding hi 9 Home Rule proposals. Tha formation of a coalition Ministry by the Marquis of Salisbury and the Marquis of Hartington has been mooted as the outcome of the political crisis. A Gladstonite has been electpd for Anglesea, in place of a Liberal candidate. The opposition of Mr John Bright to the Home Rule policy of Mi* Gladstone has seriously damaged the latter in connection "with the prepetit election campaign, and in many cases the defeat of candidates presenting |hemeelve" as aupporrters of Mr Gladstone id ascribed to this causo.
