Messrs Butler and Stevens, land purchase commissioners, returned yesterday from their mission up Wanganui river where they had been securing signatures of the deed of sale of Waimarine blockß a butting on the centra lline' The report being very successful, Mr Lawrenco Cussen, of the Survey Department, came with them. He reports that three weeks ago he was at the top of Ruapehu, when he Baw steam issuing from the crater. A few days later he saw a column of steam fully 200 feet high. The natives stated that they had never known anything of the kind happen before, JRuapehc always being deemed extinct. Mr Cuesen make, a report to the Government on the matter.
