SUGGESTED CAUSE OF ERUPTION. ' Cheesman, Government meteorological ob»errer, ntat«s that from Wednesday night ««til yesterday mornir.g at 4 a.m., there was a ateady fall of the barometer here, indicating a decreaso of atmospheric prtauie on the earth's surface. If a similar fall took place at Itotorua at the time of the eruption, rt would seem as through the decreased pressure of utmosrhere procipt*ted tli© eruption. At two o'clock this morning a strong glare was observable in the southern heavens, proceeding dontlens from tho volcano of Mont Taruwere. GRAPHIC DESCRIPTION. An English tourist thus relates his experience : — Weut on Buuday to Wairoa ; Tuesday to the terraces. Wednesday at 10 p.m. eaithquakes began rocking the house in which we stayed (Brent's Hotel). The shocks became more frequent, when a terrific eruption occurred ; huge mountains of flame issued forth, and went upwards with a tremendous roaring sound, which prevented uo hearing a word spoken. Then • denne mass of smoke belched forth, gradually aprending orer the heiiYens, and enshrouded us in as gloomy a durknefti as previously we were snr rounded by darling light ; the transformation being very painful and terrifying to most of us. The earthquakes continued intermitently till four o'clock, when nshee came up and a great thunderstorm broke orer the place. Ashes were found three feet deep a distance of seven miles from the township. Four girls were met with, two being Misses Hazard and two McUaes,*ervantß, one of which escaped with a window blind wrapped round her and night dress. Mieses Hazard told a deeply affecting tale ; they had not long retired when they ran into their parents room upon the first shock felt. An enormous shower of ashes and atones smashed in tho roof of the house. Stnbbings, surveyor assisted Mis« Hazard to escape through window, and ft Maori woman saved the other sister, the rest of the family were burned alive, father and two little daughters, and a niece said to be • Miss Bagnall of the Thames. It is feared that the majority of the natives of settlements, Te Ariki and Kaurua hare been destroyed. Among refugees who have came into Oxford, are Wilkinson aid family lately of Carlton Club Hotel. SUPPOSED FIFTY LIVES LAST. Tho impression now is that fully fifty people have perish 3d.
