Sydney, May 20.— The details of the Budget proposals of the Government are still under discussion in committee in the Legislative Assembly. The imposition of the 50 per cent, ad valorem duty on a number of articles that hitherto have been ad mitted free, and the increase in the present duty on others, is meeting with vigorous opposition from Sir H. Parkes and his followers. Sir Henry threatens, if the proposals are insisted upon, that he will do his utmost to force a dissolution. Sir John Robertson also expresses himself opposed to the proposals brought down by Sir P. Jennings. Sydney, May 21. — The debate on the proposal introduced by Government for the imposition of a 5 per cent, ad valorem duty on certain products hitherto untaxed was concluded last night. Ou a division being taken, tho motion was carried by 47 votes to 30.' Sydney, May 21. — The Cabinet pronounces in favour of a scheme for the defence of the colonies, which shall be included a clause that the colonies shall bear the expanse of the equipment and maintenance of any war vessels which may be required to be ( provided for the exclusive use of the colonies.
