A Noble Determination.

Londox, May 3. The Conservative press denounces the Midlothian manifesto as being an appeal to the passion and ignorance of the people. It is regarded as an entire abandonment of the land purchase proposal?, .and a prcdic tion as to Xtnperial Federation, as the only way out of the difficulty, is freely expressed. In his maniiesto, Mr Gladstones declai-es that no Parliamentary event has rung throughout the world like this question of Irish Koine Rule. The Cabinet is determined vipon the prosecution of its scheme, which is perfectly intelligible, and he regrets that the Irish landlords wil! not even now, while the sands are running in the houa-glass, indicate their acceptance of the land purchase system. The opponents of his proposals are, ho declares, conspicuous for an uttev want of definite policy on the subject, and to live from hand to mouth on great public questions seems to be the height of their ambition. Another point mentioned ia that the outcome of the scheme would be that Scotland and Wales would ultimately be entitled to equal rights with those proposed for Ireland. Mr Gladstone praised the manly integrity of Lord Hartington'e conduct on this subject, and quite agreed with him that it was a matter which the nation as a whole alone could settle. For himself, he concluded by declaring that he would cherfuy devote the residue of his active life to the accomplishment of this great object.
