This year's Parliamentary session opened on Thursday lust, wh^n His u/scellency the Government read the Vice Re£al Speech. The llou<*e afterwards adjourned till Tuesday next. Mr J. B. Whyte, M.H.I*., left Auckland for Wellington by the s.s. Hinemoa onTuesday. Monday, 24th May (Queen's Birthday), being a public holiday, the local post and telegraph offices will be closed all day. All mails for despatch on that day will be closed at 8 p.m. on the previous Saturday.

Shiily Baker, Premier of Tonga : Mrs Baker and child, Tonga ; Mr Lynch, England ; Mr Dysqn, -Mr Walsh, Nulson ; etc., etc. On'l^ieuneaday evening last about 30 persons met in the Te Aroha Public Hall to discuss the advisability of requesting the .Piako County Council, to levy a separate rate on the Aroha Riding ; to be expended in carrying out various improvements greatly needed in the Riding, and also to receive the first annual report of the Te Aroha Improvement Committee, etc ;Mr J.is Mills in the chair. A vote of thinks was unanimously voted the outgoing committee for the services they had rendered ; and it was resolved lhat the outgoing committee be re-elected for the ensuing year, viz : Messrs Mills (chairman), Dobson, Mackie, Robson, J. Comes, and Frazer, with Mr Blencowe in the room of Mr E. Peel, who has left the district. Considerable discussion took place with respect to the advisability of requesting that a fresh rate be struck. Mr Whitehouse moved, " That a schedule of works most reqnired in the Aroha Riding be prepared by the Engineer, and that the Piako County Council be instructed to levy a separate rate for expenditure within the riding. Seconded by Mr Dobson. Amendment proposed by Mr Frazer, That as a large portion of the last rate had not yet been collected, that no request be made for the purpose of levying a fresh rate. Seconded by Mr Erasmus. On being put by the chairman the amendment was declared carried by a large majority. (We regret being unable to more fully report the proceedings, the reason being that our representative was detained at an important, and lengthy meeting of the Domain Board, which was being held at the same time.) The survey of the Thames-Te Aroha railway has been again interruped by the natives. The native agent, Mr Wilkinson I has been sent for, t* put matters right. A sale of Cambria tailings took place at Thames on Thursday last, tlio prices realised ranging from 3s 3d to 9s 3d per ton. Mr W. J. Hunter and Co., announce by advertisement in this issue, important ( sales by public auction of a large number of cattle, sheep, etc., at Ohaupo on Tues*
day next, and of horses, vehicles, harness, and stock at Hamilton on the 26th. As will be seen by advertisement the Rev. Father Kclleher, will celebrate mass at Te Aroha to morrow. We understand the rev. gentleman ha? been deputed to visit the Australasian colonies,with the object of collecting funds for the erection of a memorail church nt Cahirciveeh to the great Daniel O'Gonnell. The Aroha Library Committee acknowledge with thanks the receipt from Dr J. L. Campbell, Auckland, of a book entitled " Poenamo ;" or sketches of the early days of New Zealand, written by himself. Wo would direct attention to Mr Arch. Wallace's advertisement in this issue. M' 1 Wallace, sinco starting as a baker at Waiorcngomai about a 3 f ear ago, has, by supplying a really excellent article, established a large and steadily increasing business. Mr Wallace waits upon Te Aroha customers daily. Mr Williams, Inspector of Surveys, this week proceeded to the Wai liar akoke Block, and will remain some days to alter the survey lately made, by which some land of inferior quality was included. At a special meeting of tho Te Aroha School Committee this week, it was resolved, that owing to the prevalence o£ whooping cough at Te Aroha, the teacher t»e recommended to enforce the provisions of clause 87 of the Education Act, which makes it lawful for the teacher to forbid the attendance of any child likely to communicate any contagious disease. Mrs Marsdon having, on the recommendation of the Te Aroha School Committee, been grafted a few week's leave of absence from school duties, the Board have appointed Mrs Jeffrey, of Waiorongomai, as assistant teacher, pro tern.
