AUSTRALIAN NEWS. The Wreck of the Schooner Vpolu. Safety of the Missing Boat's Crew.
The mail steamer Bulimba, which arrived at Townsville on April 29, picked up off * Cape Grafton the missing boat's crew of the schooner Upolu, of Sydney, which was wrecked on the Barrier Reef at Trinity Opening the previous day. The Upolu left Townsville on the 20th instant, bound on a labour cruise, and on Saturday marning, according to the mate's statement, in attempting to pass through Trinity Opening, the vessel struck. All means to get her off failing, th 6 "trade" was brought on deck, and on Monday the mate left the vessel with the passengers' effacte, and some belongings of the crew, and purposed landing on a sandbank which was in sight. At this time it was blowing hard from the south-east, with heavy rain squalls. At 4 in the afternoon the mate saw Captain Bowers in a whaleboat, with the rest of the erew,'uoder sail, standing towards the coast. The mate epent the night without food, and next morning he started to reach the coast, but knocked, about until the Bulimba was sighted.' The mate had with' him three of the crew and a passenger named Clutterbuck, and as the boat was small and much overloaded, they had much difficulty in keeping afloat The captain's boat reached Port Douglas safely.
