Beasts Still Sacrificed at Worship.
It appears tbat there are still some Christians in tho Russian Empire who retain one characteristically pagan custom of their forefathers - the sacrifice of beasts as a part of public worship. Not long ago tho St. Petersburg "Zeitung" stated that this practice was in use on certain occasions at VVyborg, in Northern Finland, among the Karetes, who are devoted adherents to the Orthodox Church. The " Sviet" now states that the.same ritual servives among the orthodox inlanders of Mantschinschan, about twenty five versts from the Monastery of Wa'aam, where there is a chapel dedicated to the Prophet Elias. Several times every year threa oxen, and sometimes more, areo brought by Christian pilgrims to the chapel, in the front of which they are solemnly slaughtered amid the ringing of bells. Tha dead beast?, however, are not burned, as they formerly were, but are boiled, and the pilgrims, together with the villagers make a hearty dinner out of the sacred flesh. "Pall Mall Gazette."
