• This above all — to thine own self be true, And it must follow as the night the day, Thou canst not then be faise to any man.' — Shakespeare.
SATURDAY, MAY 8, 1886.
At the Piako CoiWy Council meeting on Thursday la. c t, Mr Cook son, tramway manager, submitted his report on the proposed sledge track to connect the Tui mines with the termination of the Crnnry tramway. The report stated that a very good track couLl be made at an estimated average cost of about two pounds per chain ; the most difficnlt portion to be constructed being from the Premier mine to the top of the hill, where the country is principally composed of hard rock. There are no engineering difficulties to face, and tho total distance of the proposed track was «bsumed to be about two miles, nearly •equally divided between the two counties. The subject was discussed at some length, and we are glad to bi - able to state that the proposal to make this track waa favourably received by the Piako Council, who, before taking any further st«*ps, however, decided to tele.graph to the Ohinemuri County Council asking them if they would construct the portum within their district. The
monthly meeting of the Ohinemuri Council will be held to-day at Paeroa, .when the mntter will he discussed ; and we feel confident that the Ohinemnri Councillors recognise the importance of the" work, 'and undertake to form lhoir portion, applying to Government for. a subsidy, which request there is little reason to doubt would be grunted. By the construction of such a track as that referred to, a vast extent* of comparatively unprotected amiferous country would he opened up in both counties, to their threat benefit ; a £rent impetus wouhl be given to prospecting 1 , and quartz could by its means be conveyed to the County tramway and thpnce to either Fergusons or Firth and Clarkes batteries. We hope to see this veiy desirable work shortly commenced.
We ore compelled to hold over till next issue, mininp news, 'a number of localß, report of Piako County Council, etc., etc. Wesleyan service, at Karangahake on Sunday next, at 4 p.m. Mr J. F. "We would direct the attention of our readers to Mr John Moffats advertisement which appears in this issue. Amongst the live stock to be sold are the well known stallions Feve, (thoroughbred) and Bonnie Prince (clydesdale) whilst the majority of the horses to be sold, (over forty in number) are? of an exceptionally good class, highly bred, and should attract a large number of buyers. Some 200 tons of iron ore and about 30 tons of shell (for lime) are now lying at Karangahake, ready for use when the Woodstock furnace is started. A very large ton nage of ore has been broken out for smelting, and in fact everything awaits the appointment of a staff of experts. The present hitch is through some misunderstanding between the creditors in E. K. Davis's estate* and LaMonte re arrangements, and capital for running the furnace. Messrs J. C. Firth, W. T. Firth, T. Harris, S. Higgins, and D. Sully have been elected members of the Matamata District Road Board, without opposition. - ( A typographical error occurred in our last issue, the price of Nordenfeldt, lately purchased by 4he N.Z.
