Strengthening the Russian Navy.
Acoobding to a statistical statement in i the " Gronstadt Gazette," no fewer than 26 veeeele of various types have been begun, completed or equipped within the last year for the Baltic and Black Sea fleets of Russia, or for the Siberian flotilla. Of these the most important are the large ironclads Catherine, Tchesme, Sinope, Imperator, Alexander 11., and Admiral Nachimoff, and furthermore, the gunboats Sivutoh and Bober, and several torpedo-boats of the Lieutenant IJj in pattern. Thebuildingof granite walls at the port of Cronstadt has also been proceeded with, and" dooks have been conatructed at Sebastopol. Considerable additions have likewise been made to the steelarmour manufactories of Obukhoff. The plan of converting the port Libau, in Courland, into a naval harbour is said to have been abandoned, but on the other hand, it is likely to be made a squadron station for the Baltio fleet. J
