The Race for the Sydney Cup.
Australian papers to hand to-day state that the race for the Sydney Cup was truly run from start to finish, and Silvermine, in superb condition, made the pace a cracker right up to the half-distance, when Cerise and Blue, who had stumbled when rounding the turn, caught him in the moat brilliant manner, and finishing with her usual determination, won cleverly by a clear length from Silvermine, while Britisher, who came at a terrible bat from the home turn, was only beaten by a long neck for second place. The victory was received with the greatest enthusiasm, and Mr Oxenham, who backed his little mare for about £15,000, was heartily congratulated upon all sides. Cerise and Blue was trained by Mark Thompson, and magnificently ridden by Colley, who never lost a chance with the mare all through the race, and handled her moat artistically when the real struggle began. Nelson started first favourite at 4to 1, and was ridden by Brown. He ran a good horse till the home turn, and his defeat was attributed to want of the necessary condition for a severe two mile race.
Taiaroa has been sold for £200 for stud purposes to Mr Henderson, of Oamaru.
