SPORTING NEWS. Auckland Racing Club Autumn Meeting. Auckland, April 26.

The first day's racing yeeterday was suc- | cessful in every respect, and the proceedings passed off without a hitch. With the exception of the Leger, all of the events turned out surprises, and good totalizator dividends were the order of the afternoon. His Excellency the Governor and suite were entertained at luncheon| by the stewards, and they remained on the course till previous to the last race of the day. After a lot of fiddling at the post, the lot were despatched to a wretched start, of \vhich Victory had the advantage, the colours of Libeller and Friendship being most conspicuous of the others. Victory continued to lead round the bottom turn and along the back of the course, with Libeller as his nearest attendant. The Cat laying third, Friendship fifth. Making the pace a warm one, Victory led the field through the cutting by a clear length, but approaching the stretch, Wapiti was *seen to come from the ruck, and cutting the leaders down, he led into the straight by a couple of lengths, and gradually increasing the lead, he romped home the easiest of winners by half-a-dozen lengths.
