Blenheim, April 13. Betoxd the fourteen lives known to have been saved, there ie no hope that any of the passengers and crew of the ill-fated Taiaroa will be found to have survived the wreck. As there were by all accounts about fifty on board the steamer when she struck, it follows that the victims of the disaster number over 30.
LIST OF THE VICTIMS. The list of missing crew and passengers, so far as can be ascertained, is as follows : —
Crew. R. B. Monkman, first officer; James Powell, second officer; R. Spooner, purser ; C. G. Stratford, second engineer; R. Irvine and G. McDonogb, firemen ; B. Morrison, R. Williams, and D. Hill, lamptrimmers ; G. A. Brown, stewardees; F. Gellichan, chief cook; W. Keelin, second
cook ; T. Delaney, G. Why brow, and R. Bathgate, stewards ; John Jones, K. Williamson, P. McMillan, JatnesMcGon agio and Peter Hanson, seamen.
Passengers. Mrs G G. Mrs Auderson, Messrs Waid (of Torpedo corps), Galbraith, Vallance, Hawkins (bootmaker), .Tamos Ferguson," Smith and Darbord (the last two were men who had been attending Wellington races). Thero are known to have been other passengers whose names have not been ascertained.
Names of Survivors The following is a full list of the survivors so far as has boen ascertained :—: — Passengers. Gilbert Mutton, Constable MeQuarrie, Sergeant Grant, washed ashore ; Thomas Olivier, Kobert benderson, John Harpor (Christchurcb), incaptain'a boat. Crow. Georgo Thompson (captain), Samuel Dftlrymple (engineer), William Quin (boj ), William Tain (iireman), James Wobb (carpenter), John Mackay (A B), Duncan Campbell (steward), Joseph Fielder (chief steward), in captain's bo\t.
Aii 111 fated Steamer. The Taiaroa left Glasgow on September ISth, 1575, and put into Hobart on December 3rd to coal. On tho evening of November 3id, two days after leaving Capotown, Captain Robort Gilpin, who had been engaged in England to bring her out and who purposed settling in the colony, died \\hilo dining with hi 3 brother oflicers. The command then devolved on the chieE officer, | Johannes Spiogelthar. Early on tho morning of December 10th sho stranded on the Old Man rocks, a quarter of a milo to tho north-west of Dog Island, tho nccidont resulting from want of knowlodgo of this coast on the part of Captain Spiegelthar, With tho assistance of tho s.B. Express, she was towed off the same- day without much damage, and arrived at Port Chalmers on the llth, boing docked on the 17th.
Further Description of the Steamer. She camo out to the order of the Albion Shipping Company, For a timo she traded between Port Chalmers and Timaru, under the agency of Mr Keith .Ramsay, and was commanded by Captain James Stewart. Early in IS7G the was puicha?ed by vho Union S.S. Company, and kept in the parao trade under tho command of Captain Poter?en. Since then &he has been mostly ongaged in the coastal trade, but made ono voyago to Fiji. She was of 299 tons register, and was built at Glasgow by A. and J. Inglis for Messrs Patrick Henderson and Co , Albion Shipping Company. Her dimensions were :— Length, 189 feet; beitn, 23 feet ; and depth of hold, 12 feet. Sho was fitted with high and low press uro surface condonsing engine 3 , of H..D. nominal hovse power, but capable of being worked up to 000 horse power. Her aveiago speed was between S^ and 9 knots an hour.
A Total Wreck The ves=el is a total wreck, and her entire loss falls upon the Union S S. Co.
