["AGE" SPECIAL.]

London, March 17t — The navy estimates were under consideration in the House of Commons last night. Sir T. Brassey, member for Hastings, spoke strongly in favour of periodical visits being made by a powerful pquadron of British vessels to Australia and the Islands in the Pacific. Londox, March 27. — New estimates have been prepared of the cost of buying the estates of Irish landlords in accordance with Mr Gladstone's land purchase scheme. It is now calculated that the expenditure in connection with the scheme would not exceed £120,000,000, instead of £150,000,000, as previously stated. Mr John Bright, member for Central Division of Birmingham, supports Mr Joseph Chamborlain, Secretary of the Local Government Board, in the dissatisfaction which he has expressed with reference to Mr Gladstone's Irish policy.

A proposal has been made that the system already in force with regard to Canada sending English Industrial School children as emigrants should be extended to the Australian colonies. The Colonial Office has promised to consult the Governments of the various Australasian colonies on the subject with a view of ascertaining whether any objection is entertained against the proposal.
